Q. How can I bring up the next page of the newspaper I am viewing?
A.
Click on the "Next Page" button at the top of the screen. You can also click on the "Prev Page" button for the previous page.

Q. How can I print only the part of the newspaper page that I want?
A.
To select a portion of a PDF to print in Adobe® Reader® use the graphics select tool:
-- In Adobe® Reader® 5 +, the graphics select tool has its own button on the toolbar. (it looks like a box with a dotted line; in version 7+ it looks like a camera inside a dotted line box)
-- Using the graphics select tool, click and drag out a rectangle covering the area you'd like to print
-- Click the printer icon. Choose print range 'Selected Graphic'. This will print only the page area you selected before opening the Print dialog box.
You may also want to tick expand small pages to paper size and/or shrink over-sized pages to paper size. Click OK.
Q. Why is the date of the newspaper I am looking for not included?
A.
The dates included were chosen because of the anticipated interest in the period covered, the condition of the original newspapers and the quality of the microfilm from which these images were made. Once a date range for a title was chosen all of the filmed issues available were done. For some titles there may be missing issues or entire years that no longer exist.
Q. Can I make the newspaper page take up more of the screen?
A.
Yes. The newspaper page is in a frame on the right of the screen and the search results are in a frame on the left of the screen. To increase the size of the newspaper frame move your cursor slowly over the gray vertical line that separates the two frames until your cursor changes from a pointer to an horizontal arrow with two points. Then, hold down your left mouse button and drag the gray line to the left and release the mouse button. This will increase the size of the newspaper page. To restore the search results column, reverse the procedure.
Q. Can I exclude words in my search?
A.
You can exclude one or more words from your search by entering a minus sign (-) before the word(s). For example, to search for apples but not MacIntosh , enter the search as: apples   -macintosh
To exclude a phrase, enter the phrase in quotation marks like this: apples   -"red delicious"
Q. How can I search a newspaper title by date?
A.
There is no easy way to search or limit results by date. Here are some things to try: Include part of the newspaper file name that includes the year in your search. First do a search without the date to see the format of the file name for your newspaper. All of the files consist of the newspaper title and the year as the first two parts of the file name, so, to search the 1912 issues of the Elizabethtown Post for snow, enter "elizabethtown-post-1912" and "snow" in the search box. Be sure to include the quotation marks! You can also view a list of newspaper issues arranged by date by clicking on the "List of issues in chronological order" on the first page for each newspaper. When using this directory listing of newspaper issues the Next Page and Previous Page buttons at the top will not work. Use the Back button of your browser to navigate.
Q. May I suggest titles to be added to this site?
A.
Yes, as long as the title was published in Northern New York (Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Jefferson, Lewis, Oswego or St. Lawrence counties). Email the address on the "Contact Us" section of this web site.
Q. I did a search for a name that I know is in the paper but it did not come up. Why?
A.
Indexing is done by searching for words in an image of the newspaper page. This is called Optical Character Recognition or OCR. OCR is not a perfect process even with very good originals. When the originals are discolored or contain broken type, the results are less good. If the OCR program was not able to identify a word it will not appear in the index.
Q. Why do the photographs look so "washed out."
A.
The images were created as black and white bi-tonal images. This type of image is great for text but not so good for pictures. If you require a better copy of a picture, a grey-scale image can be created from a microfilm copy of the newspaper. Check http://www.icepac.net/fnewspapers.html for a source of a microfilm copy.
Q. Where can I see or get copies of the original newspapers?
A.
http://www.icepac.net/fnewspapers.html has the location of all of the original copies that we know of. It also lists libraries and archives which hold microfilmed copies. It is important to contact a repository for its current holdings and conditions of access before visiting.
